This project is a wonderfully minimalist solution for a local arts community’s ambitious program. A limited budget forced the designers to do ‘more with less’. A modest building was adapted to house an arts program including a gallery, theatre, workshops, studios and café. The ‘off the shelf’ material palette includes polycarbonate panels, garage doors, metal cladding, and paint—lots of paint. Custom elements, such as the informal outdoor seating, are utilized for maximum effect. Its aesthetic appeal is drawn from a discriminating reappraisal and celebration of what already exists—a Marcel Duchamp’s approach, if you will.
