This project transforms an unpleasant and ubiquitous vehicular underpass into an engaging pedestrian-oriented urban space with a few deft moves. The design process was a collaboration between landscape architects, artists, planners, and engineers, and also included public input. The linear park plays a vital role in creating safe passage for pedestrians, artfully interpreting glacial geomorphic esker forms and colours reminiscent of lake waters that undulate along its course. These forms intermittently incorporate guard rails that guide snow clearing and manage stormwater, as well as lighting effects that increase safety and aesthetic appeal. Native vegetation establishes the park-like corridor and provides seasonal variation and ecological benefits. In sum, this project creates “an animated and rich place for its communities.”
