Jury Comments

This building renovation and addition capitalizes on everything that was important about Winnipeg Modernism. A Green Blankstein Russell (GBR) building from the mid-60s, it has seen a number of occupancies and renovations – none for the better. A conservation and restoration design approach, based on the original building documents, was used to reclaim the original exterior, to reconstruct the interiors and, to increase its useable spaces. Serious and sensitive attention to material and finish choices that compliment the reclaimed concrete, masonry and steel elements yields a remarkably fresh and engaging setting both on its exterior and interior. As one juror noted, the result is “simple, sustainable, purposeful, and beautiful.”
