Jury Comments

This project’s simplicity is its greatest strength. The circular two storey building—the building’s defining innovation—is elevated to take advantage of 360-degree views and to provide an engaging understorey or ‘yard’. The building’s structural, spatial and material efficiencies were of paramount importance to the developer, considering the site’s obvious limitations in the real estate market. These were addressed with a compact circulation core and pie-shaped unit plans that work extremely efficiently. Further, the minimalist concrete structure, generous fenestration and Corten steel cladding give the building an industrial character and contextual fit. It acts as an anchor and a catalyst for growth in a derelict area of urban Winnipeg. As one Juror noted, “it’s great that this building exists in the world”.
